La neuvième séance du séminaire Pour une histoire de l’IA accueillait Stephanie Dick le 7 février 2023 pour discuter de la conception mathématique de l’esprit humain dans les années 50. Ci-dessous, un résumé de la séance ainsi qu’une courte biographie de notre invitée :

Making Up Minds: Computing and Proof in the Postwar United States

This talk explores two different approaches to the automation of Principia Mathematica in the 1950s. One approach, that of Allen Newell and Herbert Simon, was predicated on the belief in a deep similarity between humans and computers. Both were, in their view, ‘symbolic information processing systems’ and that the same rules and elementary operations could be executed in the machine as in the mind. The other approach, that of Chinese-American logician Hao Wang, was predicated on the opposite belief, that computers were nothing like us. Wang’s critique of artificial intelligence was that it rested on a fiction of the human mind. This talk will survey the two approaches to automating mathematical proof that these different actors developed, the theories of humans and machines that informed them, and the afterlife of these perspectives in automated theorem-proving.

Stephanie Dick is an Assistant Professor in the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University and holds a PhD in History of Science from Harvard University. Her research and teaching focus on the history of computing, mathematics, and artificial intelligence since the Second World War. She is co-editor, with Janet Abbate, of Abstractions and Embodiments: New Histories of Computing and Society (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2022). Her first book project, Making Up Minds: Computing and Proof in the Postwar United States, explores attempts to reproduce human intelligence, mathematical intelligence in particular, in computers and the theories of human cognitive faculties that informed these efforts. She co-edits the “Mining the Past” column at the Harvard Data Science Review, serves on the editorial board of the IEEE Annals of the History of Computing, and is a co-organizer of the annual SIGCIS conference.
